Tout le monde a au moins une fois entendu parler du petit prince. Si ce n’est pas votre cas, vous faites partie d’une espèce dangereuse pour l’humanité. Mais ce n’est pas bien grave, il n’est jamais trop tard et tant qu’on a envie d’apprendre il y a toujours des choses à découvrir. « Le Petit Prince » d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry est le deuxième livre le plus traduit au monde, juste après la Bible. À la fin de votre lecture vous pourrez courir vers ce grand Classique, et vous n’aurez même pas besoin de me remercier. Je le fais pour le bien de l’humanité.

« S’il vous plaît…dessine-moi un mouton! » Le narrateur est perdu dans le désert, cloué au sol à cause d’une panne sur son avion, lorsqu’il entend la voix d’un garçon. « Dessine-moi un mouton. » C’est une requête assez bizarre mais « quand le mystère est trop impressionnant, on n’ose pas désobéir. » D’un dessin de mouton à des histoires de voyages à travers la galaxie, le pilote narrateur se lie d’amitié avec un petit prince venu d’une autre planète. L’astéroïde B612. Le prince lui raconte la vie sur sa très petite planète, son amitié/amour avec une rose, sa rencontre avec un renard, et son incompréhension face à la mentalité des grandes personnes. Le narrateur a lui-même eu un rêve brisé par ces grandes personnes. Lorsqu’il avait 6 ans, on l’a encouragé à se concentrer sur les maths et la grammaire, plutôt que de faire des dessins. Il aurait pu devenir un grand peintre, mais il a finit aviateur avec semble-t-il un problème pour se faire des amis dans le monde des adultes….

Avec ses jolis dessins, le langage simple et l’histoire faite avant tout pour les enfants, « Le Petit Prince » se révèle être une histoire assez philosophique. C’est une description de quelques absurdités de notre société, mais aussi une hymne aux choses qui rendent la vie plus belle. J’aurais bien voulu le lire quand j’étais plus jeune pour vous offrir le regard d’un enfant mais l’adulte  que je suis déjà est tout aussi émerveillée par ce conte. La vanité, la cupidité, l’orgueil, l’alcoolisme (les addictions en général) sont dépeints sous l’apparence de différents personnages. Mais l’amour, la créativité, le rêve, et l’amitié sont également magnifiquement célébrés. « Le Petit Prince » fait appel à notre âme d’enfant. Il remet en cause ce que nous considérons comme important ou sérieux: l’apparence, l’argent, le pouvoir… Pourquoi est-ce qu’en grandissant on oublie de rêver, d’aimer, et de profiter de l’instant présent, pour des choses qui au final contribuent juste à nourrir notre orgueil?
 

« Le Petit Prince » fait partie de ces livres que j’ai du mal à résumer parce qu’ils sont tellement beaux qu’il faut vraiment que chacun vive l’expérience personnelle de leur lecture. C’est une histoire que je vous recommande de partager avec vos enfants et tous vos proches. Lisez-la, discutez-en, et relisez là. J’espère un jour organiser des séances de lecture suivies du visionnage de cette adaptation cinématographique que je trouve tellement belle. Certains passages de l’histoire n’y sont pas ou ont été un peu transformés, mais ils ont essayé de garder le style assez narratif du livre. Ils ont su intéger les dessins dans l’histoire, comme l’a fait Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Ils ont également rajouté la participation d’une petite fille à qui l’histoire est racontée, ainsi que l’impact que cela a sur sa vie. Je trouve que le livre et le film font un magnifique duo à déguster avec d’autres personnes.
 

Je vais m’arrêter là, et vous laisser quelques-unes des citations que j’ai beaucoup aimées. Dites-moi en commentaire ce que vous avez pensé de « Le Petit Prince » d’Antoine de Saint-Exupéry et sinon ce que vous attendez pour enfin le lire.

« Les grandes personnes aiment les chiffres. Quand vous leur parlez d’un nouvel ami, elles ne vous questionnent jamais sur l’essentiel. Elles ne vous disent jamais : « Quel est le son de sa voix? Quels sont les jeux qu’il préfère? Est-ce qu’il collectionne les papillons? » Elles vous demandent : « Quel âge a-t-il? Combien a-t-il de frères? Combien pèse-t-il? Combien gagne son père? » Alors seulement elles croient le connaître. »

« Il faut bien que je supporte deux ou trois chenilles si je veux connaître les papillons. »

« Il faut exiger de chacun ce que chacun peut donner. (…) L’autorité repose d’abord sur la raison. »

The Little Prince: For grown-ups and kids

Everyone has heard about the little prince, at least once in their lifetime. If this doesn’t apply to you, then you are part of a dangerous species for humanity. But that’s not a big deal. It’s never too late and as long as you want to learn there is always something to discover. « The little prince » is the most translated book after the bible. At the end of your reading, you will be able to run towards this Classic, and you won’t even have to thank me. I am doing it for the sake of humanity.

« If you please– draw me a sheep! » The narrator is lost in the desert, stuck to the ground because of a breakdown on his plane, when he hears the voice of a boy. « Draw me a sheep. » That’s kind of weird as a request but « when a mystery is too overpowering, one dare not disobey. » From the drawing of a sheep to travelling stories across the galaxy, the narrator-pilot befriends a little prince from another planet, the Asteroid B-612. The prince tells him about life on his very small planet, his friendship / love with a rose, his meeting with a fox, and his misunderstanding of the mentality of grown-ups. The narrator himself had abandoned a dream because of some of those grown-ups. When he was 6, he was told to focus on maths and grammar, rather than drawing. He could have become a great painter, but he ended up a pilot with difficulties to make friends in the world of adults…

With the beautiful drawings, the simple language and the narrative tailored for children, « The Little Prince » turns out to be a pretty philosophical story. It’s a description of some of the absurdities of our society, but also a hymn to things that make life more beautiful. I would have liked to read it when I was younger to offer you a child’s point of view but the adult that I am, is equally amazed by this tale. Vanity, greed, pride, alcoholism (addictions in general) are portrayed under the appearance of different characters. But love, creativity, dream, and friendship are also beautifully celebrated. « The Little Prince » appeals to our child’s soul. It questions what we consider important or serious: appearance, money, power … Growing up, why do we forget about dreaming, loving, and enjoying the moment, for the benefit of things that only feed our pride?

« The Little Prince » is one of those books that I have troubles to summarise because they are so beautiful that you really need to have your personal reading experience. I recommend to read it with your loves ones. Read it, discuss it, and read it again. I hope to organise reading sessions followed by a viewing of this film adaptation that I find so beautiful. Some aspects of the books are missing or transformed, but they tried to keep the narrative style of the book, and they included the drawings as part of the narrative, as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry did. They also added the participation of a little girl to whom the story is told, as well as the impact it has on her life. I think the book and the film make a beautiful duet to be enjoyed with other people.

Does he collect butterflies? » Instead, they demand: « How old is he? How many brothers has he? How much does he weigh? How much money does his father make? » Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him. «
